Mentoring

The value of mentoring in assisting individuals to become successful in their chosen fields is undisputed.  In Western societies, mentoring and role modeling are used extensively to develop future leaders and assist them to be successful in society. The potential for this approach to work with African youth is therefore very high, particularly if the mentors and the role models are drawn from the African community.

GADI aims to promote successful diasporans who are well-integrated as mentors and role models, to assist in raising self-esteem and boosting the confidence of the diasporan community, especially young people and students.

The objectives of our Mentoring programs are to:

  • use mentors and role models to influence the behavior of young Africans and the diasporan community;
  • assist and support African youth in their career choices;
  • become a vehicle for facilitating employment opportunities for African youth and the diasporan community in general
  • assist African youth to make meaningful contributions to the GADI community.

The objective of the mentoring programs is to reach out to young Africans through a mentoring and role model program by using Africans and African descendants who have successfully integrated into Germany and doing well in their chosen professions and careers. It is expected that through one-on-one consultations, it would be possible to assist youth in the diaspora at the crossroads of career and/or development in society to make life choices that will help them succeed themselves and later become useful members of the GADI community. We believe that the massive success of Africans in various fields of activities could undoubtedly help to improve the image of Africans in Western society and restore our dignity. The GADIAN Mentoring program is the first of its kind in Germany for African youth and African descendants, and as such is seen as a pilot, which could then be rolled out internationally if successful in Germany.

Although there are youth counseling services already in existence in Germany that could achieve similar outcomes to the Gadian mentoring program, it is considered that providing this service with African role models who would be familiar with the cultural context of the target groups would be more effective.
